When EMPIRE XPU is started, a template engine comes up where many predefined templates or examples can be loaded to begin with. Starting from scratch or opening an existing project is possible, too. Here, the Vivaldi antenna is selected from the examples tree to demonstrate the simulation flow.


First, some global parameters, e.g. units, can be entered and the template parameters can be adjusted. When opening the default template, a microstrip line with two MSL ports, substrate and field dump is generated. Any template or example can be simulated without further adjustments. Because EMPIRE XPU excites the structure with a time pulse, the frequency range is entered in the beginning which determines the pulse width. The upper frequency and the resolution entered are a measure for the grid accuracy used for the automatic meshing. During simulation the material can be treated either lossless or lossy for a selectable frequency band. The loss calculation frequency band is centered to the target frequency for narrowband modelling.
